What's This?

Los Angeles Lakers guard/forward Nick Young stunned the NBA world when he sealed a 106-102 win against the Detroit Pistons on Friday. Young, widely renowned for his scoring ability (and not much else), made a game-changing play on the defensive side of the ball.

Sliding across while Josh Smith drove to the hoop, Young drew a charge with less than three seconds left in the game. The charge can be seen at 2:04 of the video below:

Shortly after making this great play, the man they call “Swaggy P”, proclaimed himself as the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year, per Mike Bresnahan of the LA Times:

Lakers’ coach Mike D’Antoni was surprised about Young’s play. However, he did compliment Young’s effort recently, reports Lakers Reporter Mike Trudell:

Young’s teammate, and good friend, Jordan Farmar joked about Nick’s defense. The Former Bruin stated that Young has never taken a charge before, per Bresnahan:

Nick Young has been more renowned for his style than his defense since he’s been in the league. However, I’m sure you would all agree with me when I say that I would love to see Swaggy win DPOY.

On a serious note, this type of effort is what the Lakers would love from Young. Everyone knows the man can score, but its these types of plays that really help the team.
