Kyle Anderson and Jordan Adams did not play and the Oregon Ducks (19-8, 7-8) defeated the UCLA Bruins (21-7, 10-5) by the score of 87-83 in 2OT.
UCLA head coach Steve Alford announced before the game that Anderson and Adams were suspended for a violation of team rules. There was no speciﬁcation as to what the violations were.
In the waning seconds of the second half, Oregon was holding on to a 1-point lead. Bryce Alford had just made a 3-pointer and Oregon had to get a successful inbound pass in. But UCLA pressed the Ducks defensively and forced a turnover. Zach LaVine released a wild shot and missed. The Bruins fouled and the Ducks stretched their lead to 3 with 1.8 seconds remaining the game. Travis Wear threw a full court pass to David Wear who sank the long 3-pointer to tie the game at 71 and send the game into OT.
In the ﬁrst overtime period, UCLA showed the spectacular defense that they have periodically shown throughout the season, holding Oregon to two points. But, the lack of a go to offensive weapon became clear as the Bruins only scored to points themselves. The game was tied at 73 and the Ducks had the ball with a 2 second difference between shot clock and game clock. Oregon brought the shot clock all the way down, put up a shot, and missed. On to 2OT.
With 1:39 left in the game, UCLA had the ball down 80-77. Travis Wear sank the easy bucket to bring the Bruins within 1. But UCLA could not secure a defensive rebound on the other end, fouled, and Oregon made 1 of 2 free throws. Bryce Alford drove to the basket, missed, and Oregon pulled down the defensive rebound. UCLA was forced to foul. Elgin Cook made both free throws to give the Ducks an 83-79 lead with 23.0 seconds in 2OT. Zach LaVine made 2 free throws to bring the Bruins back with 2. Johnathan Lloyd made 2 free throws and the Ducks took an 85-81 lead, a lead which they never gave back.
Bryce Alford led the short-handed Bruins with 31 points in his ﬁrst college start. He also added 6 assists and 2 rebounds. Zach LaVine had 18 points, 5 assists, and 8 rebounds. Norman Powell had 14 points.
Joseph Young led the Ducks with 26 points. Mike Moser led with 20 rebounds; he also had 12 points.
UCLA shot 39% from the ﬁeld; Oregon shot 38%. The Bruins were 7-22 from behind the arc; the Ducks were 10-28. UCLA was 24-31 from the free throw line; Oregon was 29-39. Both teams took great care of the ball as the Bruins only had 11 turnovers and the Ducks only had 12. UCLA had 39 rebounds; Oregon had 50.
UCLA will ﬁnish it’s home schedule on Sunday as they take on the Oregon State Beavers at 6PM.
